The Reason Los Blancos Possess 'Utter Faith' in Youngster Pitarch

The teenager has featured in seven games for Real Madrid, featuring five appearances in the starting lineup.

Whenever a teenage creates Real Madrid a historic moment in a crucial European match against Manchester City, it naturally attracts praise and the spotlight.

In only his maiden start in the tournament - and fifth game for the club - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the fifteen-time Champions League winners secured a three-nil last-16 first leg lead at the Bernabeu.

The young player, who also had his Real debut in the qualifying round a month ago with a cameo off the bench at Benfica, then helped Los Blancos defeat the English champions in Tuesday's second leg to secure a quarter-final place.

At 18 years old, Pitarch became the team's youngest player to start twice in the Champions League's latter rounds, beating star Vinicius Jr's previous mark by a week and a half.

Rapid Ascent Through La Fabrica

This talent is the latest to emerge from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of the manager's most promising young players.

He signed for Real from CD Leganes in 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico and Getafe academies, and starting out for the under-19 side, where he quickly made a positive impact.

Pitarch progressed to the reserve side and it was during a pre-season game in which they faced the academy's first team, then coached by Arbeloa, where the teenager is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who took over from the previous coach in January.

Reports would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," noting he excelled not only for his skill on the ball, but for the energy, character and drive he brought to the team.

'His Best Attribute Is His Personality'

In the pre-season of 2025, former boss Alonso invited the youngster to train with the first team and awarded him minutes during pre-season.

However, it was the change in manager that proved the defining moment in his development as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in each leg against the Portuguese side that led to the meeting with Manchester City.

"I've dreamed of this each night before going to bed, the first day I started playing football, each day you head to training and every day you have a game," stated Pitarch after his debut.

"I have just achieved my ambition with the greatest club in the world and in the top tournament."

Handed a first start in La Liga against Getafe - where he was for several seasons after arriving from Atleti in 2018 - he has retained his place for the next four as injuries to Jude Bellingham and Ceballos provided an opportunity.

The teenager has seized it with displays that have belied his youth and experience.

"He's a extremely fast footballer, and you can see his capabilities," said the coach. "He is incredibly energetic, with great stamina, work-rate and mobility."

The player's mindset has also impressed his coach.

"His greatest quality is his personality," continued Arbeloa. "He always wants the possession, and when pressed, he remains unfazed.

"I understand fans might be astonished to see him start in a Champions League match, but he is selected because I had complete trust in him to perform his normal game.

"Thiago will continue to get chances with the first team. It is delightful to have a talent like him."

A Future International Decision

Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Spanish capital's community, and grew up deeply involved in the local game, moving through youth setups before joining Real Madrid's famous La Fabrica system.

He possesses both Spanish and Moroccan nationality, giving him the option to represent either country at the highest level.

Under international regulations, players may represent multiple nations at youth level without being locked in, with the ultimate choice only binding once they appear in a competitive full international.

He has played for Spain at youth level, representing both the U19 and under-20 teams, and took part in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where Spain reached the last eight.

Despite this, he has not yet decided to any full national side, who are watching his rise with keen attention.

In a recent interview, Pitarch confirmed: "I haven't made my final decision yet. Things are positive with Spain, but I will reach a decision in the near future."

This scenario mirrors that of other dual nationality talents such as Real team-mate Diaz and Barca star Yamal. While 18-year-old Yamal chose Spain, Brahim opted to play for the Atlas Lions.

Focus on the Future

At present, his attention is on establishing himself in the Real side and rewarding Arbeloa's faith.

He played 74 minutes in the 2-1 victory at City, which sealed a 5-1 aggregate success and a quarter-final tie with the German champions.

His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Manuel Angel underscored the coach's confidence in younger players to help the team pursue trophies to come.

Following his impressive impact so far on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is tipped to be a central figure in that.

"Arbeloa treats me the identical way. We handle it very naturally. I attempt not to overanalyze it too much - I must earn my minutes on the field," he commented after the success at Manchester.
