The network's Top Fresh Series of This Year Earns a Major Renewal for Seasons 2 and 3.
During the fall season, Adult Swim saw the return of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the network introduced a completely new animated series with a distinctly unique tone. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, in the spirit of a animated take of a serene talk show. During a period often marked by cynicism, this show's earnestness found an audience and propelled it a breakout hit.
A Significant Investment
On December 18th, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to develop the world of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three polite teenage brothers whose central trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four main characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the audience of the show who took a chance on the show and helped it grow," said Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
A President's Endorsement
Accompanying the news praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He thanked the fans who found the show and supported its uniquely offbeat style.
"All of you supported this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. It offers something surprisingly comfy about observing this endearing family navigate their everyday routines.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa shared his goal to move the comedy genre beyond its prevailing sarcastic tone. He traced this trend to a broader media landscape.
“There's this level of irony that we are trapped in,” noted Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
The Path Forward
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa could potentially be part of that very evolution. At a minimum, the renewal promises audiences a little more time to bask in the gentle humor of the unique Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. All episodes is available for streaming on HBO Max.
