The British designer Antony Price, the visionary UK-based designer responsible for some of the most iconic looks worn by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has sadly died at 80 years old.

He was celebrated for his sculptured silhouettes and performative fashion, most notably the light-hued ensembles that appeared in the iconic band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "their hit Rio".

"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance online."

This news arrives shortly after he unveiled his newest line in London, his first in more than 30 years. The performer Lily Allen walked in a dress evoking the famous black velvet "dress" once worn by Princess Diana.

A Lasting Legacy

Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price relocated to London during the sixties to attend the renowned Royal College of Art.

A year after graduating, he commenced his career designing men's fashion at the label Stirling Copper and was the creator of the form-fitting, button-fly pants that Sir Mick Jagger wore during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.

He launched his own brand in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show featured as its opener creations worn by supermodel Jerry Hall, who later wore the wedding dress Price created for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Partnerships with Stars

A key creative partner of the late David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the memorable jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His characteristic talent to fuse elements of men's and women's fashion along with his technical proficiency in crafting sculptural silhouettes established him as a "true original," in the words of the UK's fashion authority.

During the nineties, he commenced designing pieces for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, which included various looks for her tour of the United States following her marriage.

Following a profession lasting over fifty years, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London recently in partnership with the label 16Arlington.

  • Sculpted Silhouettes: The core of his aesthetic.
  • Performative Style: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
  • Gender-Fluid Fashion: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
  • A Client List from Rock to Royalty: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.

The industry mourns the loss to a authentic original whose influence on fashion and music remains deeply ingrained.
