Russell Wilson Fires Back at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Over Jaxson Dart Comments

NY Giants quarterback Russell Wilson did not hold back on social media this week, responding to latest comments from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.

"Tasteless... but not surprised...," Wilson stated on X. "Didn't realize you're still bounty hunting 15+ years later through the press."

The quarterback's response pointed to the infamous bounty scandal controversy from 2009 to 2011, when Payton was coaching the Saints.

At that time, the NFL found that the Saints had rewarded team members for delivering aggressive tackles on opponents. Consequently, Payton was suspended from the league for a full year.

What Sparked the Latest Dispute

Wilson's response came after Payton made comments following Denver's historic comeback victory over the New York. The coach remarked that the team had "discovered new energy" with Jaxson Dart, who has taken over Wilson as the starting quarterback.

Moreover, Payton implied that he had informed team owner John Mara that he would rather playing against Wilson over Dart.

"I spoke to John Mara recently and I said, 'We hoped that the switch would've happened long after our game,'" the coach commented.

Context of the Coach-QB Partnership

  • Wilson was traded to the Broncos from Seattle in 2022 and signed a five-year, $245M extension.
  • The Broncos went 4-11 in his debut year prior to the team hired Payton, who was coming back to the sidelines after a period in broadcasting.
  • Payton replaced Wilson late into the 2023 campaign, a move that ensured the quarterback from suffering an injury.

Had Wilson remained on the team by spring 2024, his $37 million salary for the following year would have been locked in. Ultimately, Wilson was let go, marking the ugly split between the quarterback and his mentor.
