Ex-Treasury chief Lawrence Summers is exiting the directorate at OpenAI, just a week after a collection of electronic messages between him and deceased financier Jeffrey Epstein became public.

Summers stated in a statement that he was "appreciative for the chance to have contributed, optimistic about the promise of the company, and anticipate tracking their advancement".

Summers, who previously presided over the Ivy League institution, announced on recently that he would be scaling back from public commitments due to his association with Jeffrey Epstein.

The freshly disclosed communications demonstrated that the official communicated with the financier until the 24 hours preceding his 2019 detention for accused human trafficking of minors.

In another announcement, the AI firm stated it understood Summers' determination to resign.

"We appreciate his numerous inputs and the perspective he provided to the directors," the company commented.

Political Context

This development follows after the two houses of the legislative branch agreed on this week to approve a bill that would require the Department of Justice to disclose its files on Epstein.

The legislation will subsequently move to the administration of the White House for endorsement. Trump has indicated he plans to approve the legislation, after reversing his stance on the subject following pressure from his base.

A collection of Epstein-connected messages disclosed by the legislative panel days ago referenced multiple high-profile figures in the Epstein's previous network, without indicating any illegal behavior by those figures.

The emails showed that Summers and the financier often met for meals, with the billionaire often attempting to connect Summers to notable international personalities.

After the correspondence were shared with the general audience, Summers stated he took "complete accountability for my ill-advised choice to maintain corresponding with Mr Epstein".

He added that he wanted "to restore trust and mend relationships with the individuals most important to me".

Career Background

Summers served in senior posts under two Democratic presidents; serving as Treasury chief under Bill Clinton, and as leader of the White House economic team under President Obama.

He headed the university from the early 2000s and continues to be a faculty member there. When stating his withdrawal from public roles earlier on Monday, he indicated he would persist with his academic responsibilities.

Further Repercussions

Following the economist's statement on earlier this week, the policy organization, a liberal policy institute in Washington where he was a senior fellow, announced that the economist was no longer associated with the group.

He joined the directorate of OpenAI, which makes the AI chatbot, in last year - following a unsuccessful effort to oust its top executive OpenAI's head.
