The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region's LegCo serves as a regional legislature with the power to create and amend laws for the region. Nonetheless, elections for this body have seen a sharp reduction in genuine political alternatives against a backdrop of significant governance changes in the past few years.
After the 1997 handover, a principle of "one country, two systems" was promised, pledging that Hong Kong would keep a level of independence. Gradually, analysts argue that civil liberties have been systematically curtailed.

During 2014, a proposal was put forward that was designed to allow residents to choose the Chief Executive. Critically, any such election was limited to candidates pre-approved by the mainland government.
During 2019 was marked by widespread protests, which featured an event where residents accessed the legislative complex to express anger against a controversial legal amendment.
The Effect of the Security Legislation
Passed in mid-2020, the NSL handed new legal tools to Beijing over Hong Kong's affairs. Conduct such as secession were criminalized. Following this law, the primary opposition organization dissolved.
Today's Electoral Process
