At least 64 Dead in Rio's Largest Security Action on Organized Crime
A minimum of 64 people died in a security raid targeting the Red Command gang in Rio de Janeiro's northern suburbs - the most extensive and fatal action in the area's records.
Four security agents were among those killed during Operation Containment in the communities of Alemão and Penha, state officials said. In excess of 80 suspects were arrested.
Fierce clashes commenced when around 2,500 law enforcement officers entered the area on Tuesday morning. The Red Command responded with armed resistance, setting fire to barriers and launching explosives via unmanned aircraft, officials said.
The International human rights organization expressed being "appalled" by the police operation, urging "prompt and effective investigations".
Operation Impact
The informal settlements near the city's international airport is seen as the main base of a major illegal networks.
State officials said at least 50 of the deceased were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".
Numerous individuals were injured, including non-combatants affected by the violence.

Residents have compared the hillside area - home to about 300,000 people - to a "war zone" since the operation began.

The Red Command group has been increasing their control throughout the region, growing illegal substance trade paths and power in the informal settlements.
Local law enforcement said more than 200kg (441lb) of drugs were captured in the operation, along with numerous weapons.
