Acclaimed Actress Diane Ladd, Known For Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, Has Died at the Age of 89.

This Oscar-nominated actor Diane Ladd, a Hollywood veteran left us at the age of 89.

This actress, with filmography featured Chinatown, passed away at home in California’s Ojai. Her passing was announced via an announcement by her child, Academy Award-winning star Laura Dern, her daughter.

Her daughter, who starred with her mother in several movies like Wild at Heart and Rambling Rose, described her as “my amazing hero as well as my precious gift being my mom”, writing that she was at her bedside during her final moments.

“She was the most wonderful mother, daughter, grandmother, performer, creative and compassionate soul that seemed almost dreamlike,” she wrote. “We were blessed to have her. She is now with the angels.”

Initial Roles and Major Success

Ladd’s early career included small roles in TV shows like Gunsmoke and the seventies featured her performing next to actor Jack Nicholson in Chinatown.

That very year, 1974, she appeared with Ellen Burstyn in Scorsese’s celebrated comedy drama Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, a classic. Her acting landed Ladd an Academy Award nomination in the supporting actress category.

1980s and Beyond

During the eighties, she starred in the dramatic film Black Widow plus comedy sequel Christmas Vacation while also joining Alice, a comedy program derived from Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore.

During the next ten years, she was given another best supporting actress nomination for her role in David Lynch’s Wild at Heart, a cult classic where she acted as the parent of her biological child the character played by Dern. The next year she obtained an additional nod for her acting in Rambling Rose which included Laura Dern.

“This movie which Princess Diana picked as her top choice, and she brought us to the UK for a royal premiere and an event for us,” Ladd recalled of Rambling Rose. “She positioned herself between us, taking our hands, and crying, seeing us act.”

That decade featured performances in the comedy Cemetery Club, a film reuniting her with her co-star Burstyn, Primary Colors, a political story, a comedy about politics, with John Travolta and Alexander Payne’s Citizen Ruth, a dark comedy where she played the mother of Dern another time. That period also brought her TV award nominations for roles in Dr Quinn, Medicine Woman, Grace Under Fire, a sitcom plus Touched by an Angel.

Working with Laura Dern

She kept appearing with her daughter in comedy drama Daddy and Them, David Lynch’s Inland Empire and Mike White’s comedy-drama series Enlightened, a TV series. She additionally starred with actress Sandra Bullock in 28 Days, Sir Anthony Hopkins in The World’s Fastest Indian, a film and with Jennifer Lawrence in Joy.

Subsequent TV appearances consisted of Ray Donovan plus Young Sheldon.

Writing and Directing

Ladd also wrote and oversaw the comedy Mrs Munck featuring her and former husband Bruce Dern, an actor. “Bruce is an excellent performer,” she mentioned. “I was honored to direct him on a project. Back in 2018, she received an incorrect diagnosis with lung disease and informed she only had half a year left but she regained full health once her daughter transferred her to a new hospital.

“When you use your pain and prevent it from festering similar to a wound, rather utilize it to explore, to clarify the journey for you and those around, then you are triumphing,” Ladd said.
